Shooters star as Rainmen open pre-season with win over Quebec City

The outside shooters for the Halifax Rainmen starred in their pre-season debut in Quebec City last night.

Returnee Brian Silverhorn piled up 29 points and 12 rebounds and shot 4-for-9 from three-point territory, while newcomer Glen Dandridge added 25 points, including 5-for-13 beyond the arc, as the Rainmen topped the Quebec City Kebs 101-95 in their first taste of the Premier Basketball League.

“We started off slow and nervous, but once we settled down, everybody lived up to expectations,” Rainmen head coach Rick Lewis said.

“Silverhorn and Dandridge made clutch shots, and they were momentum-builders for us. Once we started making shots, they couldn’t contend with us.”

Cordell Jeanty, who played for the Kebs two seasons ago, added 14 playing against his former team.

Eric Crookshank, Rob Sanders and Tyronne McNeal did not make the trip, staying home to rest minor injuries. SirValiant Brown suffered an ankle injury and David Bailey fouled out. Neither player was on the floor in the second half, leaving the Rainmen with only six players to call upon.

Lewis said he was most impressed with the performance of the 6-foot-7 Silverhorn, who put in a lot of work in the off-season to improve his shot under pressure. He was second to Crookshank in scoring for the Rainmen last season.

“He’s by far a better player now,” Lewis said. “He impressed me the most on the defensive end and rebounding, and he’s coming off the run and shooting with guys in his face. He made some amazing baskets today with guys all over him.”

The Rainmen return home for four consecutive exhibition games at The Tower starting on Boxing Day.
