Tough battle for Rainmen to make the PBL playoffs

The Halifax Rainmen will have their hands full if they want to make the Premier Basketball League playoffs.

Only four teams qualify for the PBL post-season, with three conference winners gaining automatic entry.

The top two remaining finishers in the overall standings will have a one-game showdown to decide a fourth wildcard team.

The four teams will play off in best-of-three semifinals, with two games hosted by the higher seed.

The championship series will also be a best-of-three, but the league has not yet determined whether it will be hosted by the participating teams or a neutral site.

PBL commissioner Tom Doyle said he will give “fair consideration” to three formal neutral site bids he has received to host the championship series.

The Rainmen have also talked to the league about hosting it, Doyle said.

“Our preference is to stick with a PBL home court,” Doyle said.

A decision is expected in the next week to 10 days. The PBL also does not have plans to hold an all-star game.

The Rainmen, 3-3, have lost three straight games, slipping behind the Vermont Frost Heaves and Manchester Millrats in the Atlantic Division standings.

They play on the road Saturday at 8 p.m. against the Buffalo Stampede (1-3) and return home Sunday for a 4 p.m. rematch with the Stampede at the Metro Centre.
