Mathieu Corbeil’s outstanding weekend earned him the QMJHL’s defensive player of the week honour on Monday.

The 18-year-old goalie was named the first star in back-to-back Halifax Mooseheads victories at the Metro Centre, stopping 63 of 65 shots on Friday and Saturday as the last-place club snapped a franchise-record 12-game losing streak.

Corbeil, selected in the fourth round of the 2007 draft, was also the second star after making 23 saves in a 3-2 loss to the first-place Saint John Sea Dogs on Wednesday.

The second-year stopper from Montreal edged out Kevin Poulin (Victoriaville), Matthew Dopud (Rimouski) and Benjamin Lecomte (Saint John) for the weekly honour.

The Mooseheads were scheduled to face the Shawinigan Cataractes at the Metro Centre on Tuesday, but the game was postponed on Sunday because six players with the Cataractes have exhibited symptoms of the H1N1 virus.

Halifax will look to win their third straight game on Friday when the Moncton Wildcats visit at 7 p.m.
