Derek Gaudet has earned a contract with the Oregon-based Portland Timbers and is expected to suit up with the United Soccer Leagues First Division club in April.

The 20-year-old midfielder from Bayside impressed the Timbers’ staff during a mini-camp late last month. The team’s pre-season training camp opened yesterday.

The Timbers, who have 22 players on their roster for this coming season, are joining Major League Soccer in 2010-11. Gaudet is hoping to work his way back to MLS after making his professional debut with Toronto FC in 2008.

He spent last summer with Halifax Dunbrack and was named Nova Scotia Soccer League Premiership MVP. He also trained with the senior national team in January.
