Canada 5, United States 4: Game Blog

FIRST PERIOD

*** Canada gets into early penalty trouble with back-to-back minors to Brent Burns and Ryan Getzlaf in the first five minutes, but shuts down an American power play that went 7-for-13 in the first two games. It should be a momentum-builder for the Canadian players, but the U.S. is all over them at the moment.

*** Dustin Brown just tipped a U.S. shot off the post, as the Americans continue to swarm Canada.

*** Brent Burns puts Canada on the board at the 8:26 mark, getting a puck just inside the blue line and firing a shot through traffic that beats Tim Thomas cleanly. Since Canada was outplayed in the opening eight minutes, this is huge.

*** It’s a shooting gallery for the U.S. team right now. They’re dominating Canada and have a 12-3 edge in shots.

*** Amazingly, Canada grabs a 2-0 lead with 10.8 seconds left in the first period. On the team’s sixth shot, Ryan Getzlaf puts one into the goal area and Dany Heatley gets one past Tim Thomas. This has got to be tough on a young U.S. team.

*** Final shorts were 13-6 for the U.S.
