This February, students at the New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) Vancouver campus had an opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops, seminars and webinars during the campus’ first ever NYIT Career Week.
“Typically, such events are spread out throughout the semester,” says Lee Harris, NYIT’s associate director of employer and alumni relations, who organized Career Week. “But one of the biggest benefits of having it in this format is that it engages students early in the semester and shifts their mindset into a career-oriented focus.”
Held from Feb. 5 to 9, Career Week covered a wide range of themes that appealed to both new students as well as those further along in terms of program completion.
Among the workshop, seminar and webinar topics were basic career development preparation such as writing resumes and cover letters, finding employment opportunities, navigating LinkedIn, networking and interview skills.
“Engagement was quite good and it was well attended overall,” says Harris. “With the event, we really wanted to ensure that when students finish their time at NYIT, they have all of the tools that complement their studies and help them get to where they want to go.”
