Updated: Two pedestrians dead after separate car crashes in Calgary

Police collared a Chestermere woman Wednesday after an early morning hit-and-run that left a man dead on 17th Ave. SE.

A witness phoned 911 at about 2:30 a.m. to report a 26-year-old man had been hit by a black SUV in front of the Shoppers Drug Mart near 31st St. SE.

The vehicle sped off, according to police notes.

“The man was pronounced dead at the scene,” Det. Tory Killam said.

Officers later found the suspect’s vehicle abandoned a few blocks away, and traced its registration back to a Chestermere property.

Mounties were called there and arrested a 40-year-old woman about 4:30 a.m.

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating. Investigators suspect alcohol was a factor in that crash.

Charges are pending.

Police may also lay charges after a man in his 20s was hit by a car in the southeast community of Douglasdale Wednesday morning.

Paramedics were called about 6:30 a.m. to Douglasdale Boulevard and Douglas Woods Way SE.

Witnesses told investigators the man was walking in a marked crosswalk when one vehicle stopped to allow him to across. However, a second vehicle did not stop at the crosswalk, according to police.

"He was rushed to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition," said EMS spokesman Adam Loria.

Police confirmed the victim later died of his injuries in hospital.

Investigators interviewed the driver at the scene.

Police believe distracted driving may have played a role in the crash.
