Calgary fan plans four days of celebration for Germany’s fourth World Cup win

Fans of the German national soccer team will not only be painting the town red, but black and gold as well, as their team won the World Cup in Brazil on Sunday.

The German side beat Argentina 1-0, scoring a goal in extra time at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

German fans all over the world celebrated, including many gathering in pubs and bars throughout Calgary.

“Its awesome – drinking lots of alcohol, being hydrated, winning,” Garrit Janssen said while watching the match at the Ship and Anchor Pub with his siblings.

“It’s a great atmosphere,” said his sister Katherine Janssen. “It’s so awesome to be here.”

The Janssens had big plans to celebrate their team’s victory.

“We’re going to have a big family party tonight,” Katherine said.

“My sister is having a barbecue and we’ll just get smashed,” added Garrit. “I have four days off, so I’ll be celebrating for four days!”

This is the fourth World Cup that Germany has won, and its first as a unified nation.

The next World Cup is set to be held in Russia in 2018.
