Their goal: to brighten the days of as many Calgarians as possible.
Volunteers from Calgary’s Youth Central Volunteer Corps set out Saturday with uplifting signs, positive attitudes and a whole lot of energy. They spread good vibes and made others smile as a part of North America’s Youth Volunteer Corps Day (YVC Day).
Katja Lemermeyer, 16, is a member of the YVC steering committee and of the YVC international youth advisory board. She said Saturday’s project was the Calgary chapter’s happiness project is called the #BeHappyProject.
“Today we created our own project and it’s completely youth lead,” she said. “We’re spreading positive messages along Stephen Avenue and happiness.”
Lemermeyer said their project was well received by everyone they met.
“Everyone has been cheering so much, I think we might all lose our voices by the end of the day,” she said.
The YVC members held signs with messages such as ‘You’re beautiful,’ ‘I like your smile,’ and ‘Be happy!’ They also complimented people who walked by and encouraged them to have a good day.
Sylvia Galica, outreach coordinator at Youth Central, said the positivity of the youth was energizing.
“I feel like I’m a youth all over again with the amount of energy they have,” she said. “It’s just amazing to see the youth come together, have so much energy and so much positivity.”
She said seeing them in action made her proud.
“It’s totally made my day, and I think it’s making a lot of other people’s days too.”
