CALGARY - A trial date has been set on child sex abuse charges against a longtime employee of the Calgary performance group Young Canadians.

Philip Heerema, who is 53, faces 22 charges - including sexual assault and making child pornography - in a four-week trial to begin on January 15, 2018.

Police began investigating in January 2014 after a man came forward saying he had been victimized as a teen in 1997.

The complainant said he was a performer and Heerema was in a position of authority over him.

Police said that after the initial complaint was made, other men came forward, who were all between 15 and 18 years old at the time of the alleged offences.

Heerema was with the Young Canadians for 36 years but resigned from the organization at the beginning of the investigation.
