Calgary police have charged a teen after he allegedly shot his sister by accident.

At about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, police were called to a home in the 1900 block of 30 Street SE, for a report that a woman had been shot.

Officers found the 24-year-old woman inside the home, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, which has now been upgraded to serious, but stable.

The teen, who was in the home, was taken into custody for questioning.

Investigators believe the teen was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he picked up a handgun that he didn’t know was loaded. Police believe he accidentally fired it, striking his sister.

The 17-year-old cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He’s been charged with careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and knowing possession of a weapon with no registration certificate.
