Certified teacher, PhD holder, former university professor and research expert Raman Gill is running for Calgary Board of Education trusteeship in Wards 5 and 10.

Gill said the main pillar of her campaign is transparency.

“The taxpayers and parents should know what is going on and where the budget is going,” she said. “The trustee should be meeting with parents and letting them know, or online, clearly what’s going on regarding the budget and regarding programs.”

Gill is also running on the promise of accountability.

“Money should not be laying in a surplus, instead it should be going into the right programs,” she said. “For example, some of the parents have been very affected by the busing issue—those going to the alternative schools—so accountability is a big thing because it should be clear what’s going on in the system.”

Gill said she’d like to increase parent participation in her ward by hosting monthly meetings at easy to access community focal points, such as the Genesis centre.

“I want to be responsive because I think that will make a big difference,” she said.

After hearing about issues in the wards, Gill said she was compelled to run for trusteeship.

“I have a strong education background, I’m a community worker and I’m a certified teacher,” she said. “I can relate to the issues that I’ve been hearing in these wards. It made me want to jump in and be the voice of the people.”

Gill said she’ll be self-funding her campaign, with potential for donations from family and friends.
