Small claims court to return in New Brunswick

FREDERICTON - The New Brunswick government is introducing a bill to reintroduce a small claims court in the province.
Justice Minister Marie-Claude Blais says the move fulfills a campaign promise and follows extensive consultation with the New Brunswick Law Society and the Canadian Bar Association.
She says based on those consultations, the Progressive Conservative government has decided to increase the maximum allowable small claim to $12,500, rather than the $10,000 limit originally planned.
The former Liberal government eliminated the small claims court in 2009 as a cost-cutting measure by moving such claims to the Court of Queen's Bench.
Blais told the legislature that the $12,500 threshold will be reviewed in the future.
