Q&A with outgoing Miss Rodeo Canada Arleta Bowhay

Arleta Bowhay of Sundre, Alberta was named Miss Rodeo Canada at the Canadian Finals Rodeo nearly one year ago. Now the 20-year-old is back in Edmonton for this year's Canadian Finals Rodeo and is ready to hand off the crown Nov. 10 and head back to Olds College.

Q: What have your duties been as Miss Rodeo Canada?

A: “I am the ambassador for Canadian Professional Rodeo, so I’ve traveled all across Canada, the United States and I was in Australia as well. And I just attend rodeos and different community events and fundraisers, basically just to promote rodeo, answer people’s questions, and keep our western heritage going into the future.”

Q: What are some of your highlights of the past year?

A: “Riding in Vegas at the NFR (National Finals Rodeo), that’s definitely a big one. You don’t get much bigger of a rodeo than that, and I got to ride every night and be announced. Just to be down there representing Canada was a huge honour. Riding in my hometown Rodeo Sundre was pretty fantastic. The first night I rode in and the people were cheering for me, that was pretty overwhelming. I knew lots of people were behind me, but to hear them all cheer when they announced me as I came into the arena was pretty cool.”

Q: What are you most looking forward to at the CFR?

A: “I’m looking forward to the pageant… And it doesn’t get any better than being able to carry the Canadian flag during the performance, that’s pretty much the highlight of my whole career as a rodeo queen.”
