MPP Cheri DiNovo spoke at Queen's Park on Wednesday, reading from a sampling of online abuse she has faced as a politician.

Calgary MLA Sandra Jansen's now-landmark statement in the legislature about the abuse she faces as a woman continues to reverberate far and wide.

On Wednesday, Cheri DiNovo, an MPP in the Ontario legislature, used her members' statement to address online abuse of women in politics and express solidarity with Jansen.

"I want to add about that list — I've … been told to put a gun in my mouth … I've been called 'old,' a 'bitch,' 'hysterical'...

"I've been called several names I can't say in the House … I've been told to 'try rape, you'd like it.' I have been raped, and I didn't, thank-you very much. I shudder to think that our daughters are being subjected to this kind of language ... "

DiNovo, who is with the NDP in Ontario, said she realizes men receive online abuse as well but noted that gendered abuse she faces as a woman politician seems to be "about 90 per cent" from men.

Metro featured a three-day series on abuse women of all political parties face in Alberta politics.
