With video: Electric cars racing around the world make pit stop in Halifax

Residents and tourists strolling the Halifax boardwalk on Tuesday afternoon were treated to a viewing of six electric cars among those hoping to travel the world in 80 days or fewer.

The city was the first North American stop for the 14 international teams participating in the 80edays 2016 ELDURO race.

The teams will travel 25,000 km across 20 countries and three continents before ending the race at their starting point in Barcelona, Spain. The race also serves to promote awareness of sustainable transportation and the capabilities of modern electric vehicles.

“It’s a dream of mine to travel the world by car and what better car to do it in than in a Tesla. It’s a once in a lifetime adventure for me,” said Armand Figueras who, along with Rafael de Mestre, makes up Team Spain.

“They’re just great grand touring cars…Fast, comfortable, silent, environmentally friendly. What else could you want?”
