Like a Disney fairy tale come true, Ottawa-born figure skater Lisa Nasu-Yu is living the dream.
The 18-year-old Minto Skating Club alumnus has joined Disney on Ice for its 100 Years of Magic tour across North America.
And as it rolls into Ottawa this week, she’s back on home ice.
“I was really excited to come back here,” said Nasu-Yu. “To be able to show (friends and family) what I’m doing is really great.”
Nasu-Yu got the Disney gig after high school graduation last summer. It’s a dream, she said, to be paid to do what you love.
“(Skating) has been such a big part of my life,” she said.
Nasu-Yu took up the sport at age eight at the Nepean Skating Club. As a teen, she competed for the Minto Skating Club until she retired last season.
Skating for Disney is a new challenge, she said, particularly as she settles into a hectic touring routine along the eastern seaboard.
And the performance style is different.
For one thing, she likely never wore a turtle costume in competition. (As part of Disney’s ensemble, Nasu-Yu skates in Finding Nemo’s Turtle Rock number; She also plays a bride in Mulan, a band member and a toy soldier.)
Adding acting into the mix is new, too, but one thing hasn’t changed: the adrenaline.
“It’s amazing,” Nasu-Yu said.
With her parents in the crowd this time, it should be even more exciting.
Disney on Ice opens Wednesday at 7 p.m., the first of nine shows at the Canadian Tire Centre. It’s in town until Sunday, with up to three performances a day. Tickets start at $15 per person, or $12 per child at the evening shows.
