A CN engineering maintenance worker was struck and killed by a VIA Rail train Thursday afternoon in Pickering.
The accident occurred around 1:15 p.m., about five kilometres east of Guildwood Station, a combined VIA and GO Train station.
The accident took place on tracks between Whites and Liverpool Rds., said CN spokesman Frank Binder.
That section is not accessible to the general public, he said.
“The portion where the trains operate is strictly for trains. There are no crossings,” he said. “It's just tracks that have predominantly GO Transit and VIA Rail operating over them.”
The man was working near the tracks before he was killed, Binder said.
However, Binder could not provide any more details about what the man's duties entailed, saying that it was part of the investigation.
The incident is being investigated by CN and Durham Regional Police.
Details from police are scarce at this point.
“There are a lot of steps in this one,” said Sgt. Paul McCurbin.
