East Van man goes on alleged axe rampage after roommate dispute

A 61-year-old East Vancouver man allegedly went on an hour-and-a-half rampage after a fight with his roommate Monday night, destroying a car, furniture and other belongings with an axe and lighting two fires in their suite.

Vancouver Const. Brian Montague said officers were called to a duplex on East Broadway near Victoria Drive just after 8 p.m. and found all of its tenants waiting outside.

"He began destroying the home, basically," Montague said. "He at one point went outside and caused some damage to a car belonging to a friend of the roommate with an axe, a crowbar and some other tools."

Police tried to take the man into custody but he barricaded himself inside the home.

They eventually managed to arrest him after shooting him with a beanbag gun.

They then doused the two small fires that were burning in the living room and a bedroom with buckets of water.

Montague said the suspect is well known to police and this was their third time visiting his home this month alone.

"There are indications that drugs and/or alcohol could have played a part in his behaviour," he said.

The man is facing two counts of uttering threats, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of arson, and one count of mischief over $5,000.
