Map: Vancouver installs heart-shaped bike racks to show love for cycling

The City of Vancouver is sending a Valentine to cyclists in the form of six heart-shaped bike racks.

Designed by local firm Dobra Design, the romantic red racks are being installed in popular public spaces including the English Bay seawall and beside the Vancouver Art Gallery to “add delight to the streetscape through street furniture,” city communications coordinator Amanda McCuaig wrote in an email.

The idea is that if public spaces are more appealing, it will encourage people to use active transportation such as cycling and help the city reach its goal of getting two thirds of people out of cars by 2040.

The bike racks cost $3,240 ($540 apiece) to build, deliver and install. Typical bike racks cost between $200 and $2,000.

The city hopes people will take photos with the new racks and share them on social media with the hashtag #lovebikeyvr.
