Police say a cyclist who was struck by a vehicle while riding in Vancouver’s Stanley Park last week has now died from his injuries.

Shortly before 2 p.m. last Tuesday, the 72-year-old man was riding his bike along Stanley Park Drive near Second Beach when he made contact with a car, according to Vancouver police.

The collision caused the cyclist to lose his balance and crash heavily onto the road, police said.

Police said the man was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery for a serious head injury.

He stayed in hospital until Monday when he died.

Investigators are continuing to probe the factors involved in the crash, police said.

The 20-year-old driver has been cooperative with investigators and there is no indication that speed, alcohol or distracted driving played a role in the crash, police said.

The death is Vancouver’s ninth traffic related fatality this year, according to police.
