Expansion of North Vancouver hospice to create palliative care hub in B.C.

Vancouver Coastal Health says the planned expansion of a hospice in North Vancouver will create a first-of-its-kind facility for palliative care services in British Columbia.

The new palliative care hub will be linked to North Shore Hospice.

In addition to 15 hospice beds, the program will offer an outpatient clinic, allowing an earlier connection with patients facing life-limiting illnesses.

Other services will included video links allowing the palliative care team to see patients living on the Sunshine Coast and Sea-to-Sky corridor, and the Every Day Counts Centre.

Dr. Peter Edwards, one of the program's leaders, says the additional services are aimed at providing a seamless transition between normal care, hospice care and end-of-life care.

Just over half of the $2-million total cost of the development has already been raised, but organizers hope to bring in the remaining $800,000 during a holiday fund-raising campaign, with completion of the expansion planned for December 2017.
