Program monitoring ocean pollution closed

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is closing the program that monitors ocean pollution in Canada.

As part of the federal budget cuts, up to 75 jobs in the national contaminants program will be slashed – including nine marine scientists and staff in North Saanich.

According to reports, more than 1,000 people at the DFO received their notice Thursday. Cuts made from the DFO and the Canadian Coast Guard will save $79.3 million, DFO’s spokesperson Melanie Carkner told the Times Colonist.

The program will be shut down Apr. 1, 2013.
