Winnipeg Folk Fest sees attendance reach 53,800

The Winnipeg Folk Festival wrapped up on Sunday with strong attendance numbers and funding announcements for more improvements to the festival site.

The 39th edition of the festival had a cumulative paid attendance of 53,826, 336 musicians, 2,950 volunteers, 6,947 campers in the two campgrounds (in addition to those camping in the Birds Hill Provincial Park Campground), and 310 cyclists in the Bike Ride to the Festival last Wednesday morning.

On Saturday, the festival announced that it had received contributions of $650,000 from the Province of Manitoba and $100,000 from the Winnipeg Foundation to its Staging the Future Capital Campaign.

This funding will be used towards significant improvements to the festival site, including a new festival village, entrance and egress infrastructure, new forest stages, as well as shade, water and electrical upgrades throughout the site. Phase 1 of the improvements is already complete.

Next year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival, its 40th anniversary, takes place July 10 to 14, 2013, in Birds Hill Provincial Park.
