Men With Beards documentary trimmed and ready for Winnipeg premier

It’s a project that’s been growing for years, but the two furry-faced Winnipeggers behind the Men With Beards documentary are now finally ready to share their film with the world.

The feature-length indie documentary inspired by a 2009 road trip to the World Beard and Moustache Championships will make its official Canadian premier at Cinematheque in Winnipeg Friday night.

“We’re pretty excited to be finally unleashing it on the world,” said Dylan Fries, who put the film together with his partner at Electric Monk Media, Michael Sanders. “It’s been a long haul and we’re looking forward to finally finishing it and letting people see it.”

The documentary features interviews with serious beardos and the people who love them from Winnipeg and around the world and includes—spoiler alert—a whole lot of beards.

“Yes it’s a movie about beards and the men who grow them, but I think we look at a lot of different topics through that lens,” explained Fries. “It’s a hard film to describe, because as much as it is a film about beards it’s told in a way that I think a lot of people can kind of relate to.

“We have some history, some comedy, some pop culture, and a little something for everybody—don’t be afraid if you don’t have a beard you can still come and enjoy it.”

The filmmakers have inked a deal with U.S.-based Devolver Digital Films to have Men With Beards released on a number digital platforms including Video on Demand in the States and online through sites like iTunes and Distrify.

The pair also has DVD copies of the documentary available for sale at

Men With Beards runs at Cinematheque Friday and Saturday starting at 9 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. A second showing will go Nov. 21 at 9 p.m.
