Street hockey tournament coming to Osborne Village

It might look like an average street corner today, but next weekend the corner of Osborne Street and Stradbrook Avenue will be transformed into a multi-rink street hockey tournament and party.

The Osborne Village Business Improvement Zone is planning its first ever Village Winter Classic hockey tournament for Feb. 15, and the event will see two parking lots at the corner converted into four separate rinks for a full day’s worth of street hockey.

“It’s an idea that got sparked during Canada Day because we wanted to develop a winter festival in the village,” explained Osborne Village Biz executive director Stephanie Meilleur. “We thought of street hockey because, really, what better way to encompass Canada’s culture and bring it into Osborne Village.”

As well as four-on-four hockey games, bands are lined up to play at indoor stages set up at Jekyll & Hyde’s Freehouse and Buccacino's Fresca Italiana and there’ll also be free hot chocolate and coffee, horse and wagon rides and heaters set up to keep things warm.

“There is no level of cold that will stop this,” said Meilleur.

The tournament has three divisions for players of various skill levels and ages and teams can register for $120 at osbornevillage.com.

Prizes for the tournament include jerseys signed by Winnipeg Jets players, hockey sticks, Jets tickets and various swag from Osborne Village businesses.
