Love Local MB encourages people to eat and buy locally-made products

Local food and beverage lovers are in for some unexpected Manitoba treats at the second annual Love Local MB beer, wine and food event.

More than 30 vendors will be sampling and selling their wares Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m in the Ambassador Room at the Canad Inns Destination Centre Club Regent Casino Hotel.

“It’s kind of like a classy version of a farmers market, but with vendors you might not see at your average farmers market, “ said Peter Fehr, owner of Gourmet Inspirations, who is co-organizing the event with Bessie Hatzitrifonos, owner of Bessie’s Best.

Visitors can try foods, condiments and beverages from Manitoba vendors including Cornell Creme handcrafted ice cream, Smak Dab gourmet mustards and Yomm Beverages’ hibiscus drinks.

“The goal is to spoil your senses,” said Hatzitrifonos. “We’re featuring healthy food that tastes good and is good for you.”

Hatzitrifonos’ Mediterranean dips and spreads and Fehr’s line of gourmet cooking finishing sauces became popular in the local farmers market circuit and the duo started Love Local MB to promote other artisans.

“We wanted to showcase the fine talent of food producers in the province and encourage the public to shop locally,” said Fehr.

Last year, roughly 400 people came to the event and Hatzitrifonos and Fehr are hoping to double that number this year.

There will be a cash bar and beverages from Half Pints, Farmery Brewery and Rigby Orchards. Visitors get a free glass of wine with their ticket.

The Doug Edmond Band will serenade the crowd and there will be a concierge service available for shoppers.

Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased from Eventbrite, or $20 at the door. Love Local MB will donate a portion of their proceeds to Food Matters Manitoba.
