Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman picked up a hammer and saw a way to help Habitat for Humanity after donating a portion of the proceeds from his State of the City address to the non-profit Monday morning.
After presenting Habitat’s CEO Sandy Hopkins with a cheque for $3,000 Bowman rolled up his sleeves and helped crews building a new house on Ross Avenue West.
Winnipeg businessman Albert El Tassi, CEO of Peerless Garments, matched the donation and added another $1,000, laughingly telling media the extra money was because he wouldn’t be joining the mayor to help to build the house.
More than 1,100 people attended the mayor’s inaugural State of the City address in March, and the mayor continued a tradition of donating part of the proceeds to a local charity started by former mayor, Sam Katz.
