Osborne Village character homes could meet wrecking ball

One of the buildings set to go lost heritage status in 2009.

Character could give way to high-rise apartments in the Osborne Village area, and that is not sitting well with some residents.

Four buildings on Roslyn Street directly behind the Osborne Village Safeway are slated for demolition to make way for a proposed seven-storey, 78-unit apartment building.

Two of the homes that would be demolished are more than 100 years old, with the Dennistoun House at 166 Roslyn St. being built back in 1908, and the home at 176 Roslyn Street a 1909 building.

The city stripped Dennistoun House of historic designation back in 2009.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” said 20-year-old Madison Hadlow, who lives in the area.

“These are magnificent looking homes, and I think we should be trying to keep the older character look in this area, and now we are losing two more character homes.”

The area is also going to get a lot busier if a seven-storey apartment building rises from the ground, said Hadlow.

“And I feel bad for the people who have lived here for a long time and have watched more and more of these condos and apartment blocks be built right around them.”

The two buildings that have seen more than a century may have a lot of charm, but the caretaker of those buildings said they are both in a state of disrepair.

The caretaker, who would not give his name, said both the buildings have serious foundation problems, with one having a crack in the foundation, and said one of the buildings collects significant water in the basement anytime it rains.

He’s not sure the buildings could survive much longer in their current state, or would be worth fixing.

A public meeting for the subdivision plan for the new apartment building takes place Sept. 16 at city hall.
