Colorado shooting victim faced close call during Eaton Centre gunfire

Jessica Ghawi, a young sportswriter who covered hockey under the name Jessica Redfield, was among those killed when a gunman opened fire at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado.

Ghawi, who wrote for the website Busted Coverage, also maintained a personal blog where she wrote of her close call during last month's shooting at Toronto's Eaton Centre.

"I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday," Ghawi wrote in a post dated June 5. "I saw the terror on bystander's faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe out last breath."

Jessica sent these tweets in the hours before her murder.

Busted Coverage confirmed she was among the victims this morning.

Jessica's brother, Jordan, has been tweeting regular updates this morning. You can follow him at @JordanGhawi. He is also maintaining a blog here.

Jessica Ghawi also did some work for Patrick Burke's You Can Play project, an initiative aimed at curtailing homophobia in hockey.

Friend and fellow sportswriter Jesse Spector, who exchanged tweets with Jessica before she was killed, has written a tribute to her at The Sporting News.
