Official: 3 children who missed school found dead in Austria

VIENNA — Austrian police found three children who hadn't shown up at school dead in their home on Thursday along with three other family members in an apparent case of multiple slayings and a suicide, a police official said.

Investigators think the mother of the children, ages 7 to 10, shot them as well as her brother and own mother before turning the gun on herself, the official said.

The official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to share details while the preliminary investigation was ongoing.

Police went to check on the children because they had missed school, the official said. Officers found the six bodies in a house shared by three generations of the same family in Boeheimkirchen, a town about 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of the Austrian capital, he said.

He said the six had been dead for several days before being found. No motive has been established, he added.
