Mexico: 4 security agents, 1 suspect killed in ambush

MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities say four federal security agents and one suspect were killed in an ambush by gunmen in the southern state of Guerrero.

The federal Attorney General's Office says Monday in a statement that security forces were carrying out an anti-crime operation when they came under attack.

Seven agents were wounded, and three presumed members of a criminal gang were detained.

Guerrero state has seen waves of violence blamed on drug cartel activity.

The attack took place in the municipality of San Miguel Totolapan, which is in a particularly conflicted region known as Tierra Caliente or the "hot land."

Last month about 100 armed attacked a travelling group of journalists in San Miguel Totolapan, roughing some of them up and stealing their equipment.
