More than 100 collectible dolls and bears sat in front of Nancy Cloutier’s house yesterday, waiting for a new home.

Looking to reclaim some space, Cloutier took advantage of the city-organized Hidden Treasures Giveaway Weekend and left out some items that her mother, who had recently moved, left behind.

“I’d love to have someone just come along and take them all away,” she said.
“I’m just trying to empty my living room so I can live again without tripping over bags and boxes or bears.”

Old treasures found new life as residents all over the city took part in the event.
“It’s like a big garage sale without having anything for sale,” said Albert Shamess, director of the city’s solid waste services.

Although it’s impossible to track how many people participate, Shamess believes the event is quite popular.

Tia Johnson wasn’t even aware that it was Giveaway Day, but she stopped by Cloutier’s house and picked up a small collectible doll and a ball of yarn for her cat.

“I’ve never even heard of Giveaway Day, but it’s great. We need to have  more days like this. This is a great act of kindness and it really makes my day,” she said.
