It's the last day of another great Fashion Week. I'm curious about the 'big announcement' planned for the Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC) Media "Love-In" lunch so I head down to the Intercontinental Hotel. I'm expecting a tray of appetizers and a spritzer but instead, we're served a three course hot sit-down lunch - it's one of my best meals of the week so I'm feeling the 'love'. The announcement is the establishment of the FDCC DESIGNER Development Fund (FDDF) to assist aspiring Canadian designers at the early stages of their careers. Valued at $10,000, the bursary will be awarded to one designer (or design collective) each season to help build their label. What a brilliant idea! And the timing couldn't be better. New designers are chewed up and spit out as fast as they can launch - and this tough economy is brutal for small businesses. I'm excited to see who will win the first bursary when it's awarded in October.
Note: Submission information will be available at www.lgfashionweek.ca in the coming months.
And now, on to the tent at Nathan Phillips Square!
Friday's first show welcomes Ryerson's graduating students from their School of Fashion. I was expecting the Tent to be packed with students and supportive industry types but the majority of the seats are sadly empty.
Up first is Kat Marks with her techno-futuristic plastic corset and hip shaper, and shiny squared top with balloon sleeves. I love the lipstick-red cropped puffa jacket - her collection is the most creative and OTT - great! Totally unwearable but fun. Dayna Phillips shows a hooded cape over a waist-chinched cheeky (literally) mini dress and a jacket with a porcupine-spiked back. David Chou's pieces are most likely to be seen on Bloor Street - picture a trim navy suit with flange details and plum satin accents. Sara Duke's mens show brings to mind field workers from Robin Hood's merry band. They're wearing oversized silhouettes in rustic wools with hand-stitched details and knitted slippers - not a great look for short guys but perfect if mixed with street-smart jeans. Heidi Ackerman's playful knits have a handcrafted edge. There's a couple of particularly good pieces - a purple and orange dress and dolman sleeve jacket. Sidney Holloway takes a more basic route with routine cocktail dresses and fur jackets dressed up with beaded trim.
