Our content director, Alek Korab, usually wants no parts of fashion talk. When office chatter turns to subjects of style, he tunes it out, unless it involves futbol jerseys (Alek is a huge soccer fan.) But somehow, he found himself commissioning a freelance story on Japan's obsession with meggings (that's man leggings or tights).
The menswear phenomenon has been threatening to become a full-on trend for a while now and seems to have reached its tipping point in Tokyo. In the Japanese hipsters' defence, they usually wear their meggings underneath shorts or denim cut-offs. (That looks a lot cooler than, say, Russell Brand, whose photo was at the top of the results list when I did a Google Image search for "meggings.") No matter, our little in-house peanut gallery/panel of United Nations, gave it the universal thumbs down.
