Vancouver-based jewelry designer Sonja Picard has a second once-in-a-lifetime chance at shining at this year’s 81st annual Academy Awards.

For the second year in a row, Picard will be designing the jewelry for ABC’s on-air journalist Carla Wohl.

Wohl heard about the jewelry through one of Picard’s stores in Hollywood and contacted them requesting some jewelry be made for her.

“She just likes the meanings behind the jewelry and the style of it,” Picard said Thursday.

The designs are based on yoga symbols.

Picard had very little time to sketch the ideas she had, get them approved by Wohl and then create the designs.

“It’s a very competitive market to get onto the Oscars because you’re competing with such high-profile jewelry companies such as Cartier or Neil Lane,” Picard said. “You know that they spend millions upon millions of dollars courting the actresses to wear their work.”

“For a small designer, to even just be apart of the Oscars is a big deal for us.”

The Oscars air on CTV and ABC starting at 5:30 p.m.
