OC Transpo drivers have until the end of the month to call out all major and requested stops.
The Canadian Transportation Agency has ordered OC Transpo to ensure that, starting on March 31, stops be called out "in such a way that they be clearly heard."
In a memo to councillors by OC Transpo general manager Alain Mercier, drivers are currently calling out major stops at a rate of 80.7 per cent, which is double what it was in late 2007. Mercier wrote that they expect independently measured results of calling out of stops will exceed 90 per cent on a regular basis.
However, OC Transpo was seeking an extension for 100 per cent compliance until the end of the year in order to fit buses with an automated stop announcement system.
The CTA has also ordered OC Transpo to report levels of compliance and any new complaints received regarding the calling out of stops on its website, beginning in May 2009.
OC Transpo monitors stop announcements through the use of mystery shoppers, passenger feedback and observations by supervisors.
Mercier wrote that instances of non-compliance would be managed through progressive discipline.
