The temperatures are still reaching the double digits on some days, but it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, at least on Parliament Hill.
For the past several weeks, workers have been installing Christmas lights in preparation for the 25th edition of the National Capital Commission’s Christmas Lights Across Canada program.
While workers decorated Parliament Hill Wednesday, a total of 200,000 LED lights will illuminate 70 sites on Confederation Boulevard, including the National War Memorial, Confederation Park, Nepean Point and Gatineau’s Jacques Cartier Park from Dec. 12 to Jan. 7, said Rick Belford, a lighting technician with Roy’s Lighting.
There will also be lights installed on the properties of the prime minister’s and governor general’s residences and at embassies and other prominent landmarks, Belford said.
The official illumination ceremony is held Dec. 12 on Parliament Hill. This year, the celebration is set to coincide with the arrival of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.
