Candidates walk in Labour Day parade

More than 500 people participated in the Labour Day March yesterday. Ottawa is on record as one of the first cities to hold a labour parade, the first of which was held in 1872.

Next month’s municipal election could mean a fresh start for workers in this city, said the president of the Ottawa and District Labour Council.

“We’ve got another month and a half until the election,” said Sean McKenny. “We’d like to think that after the election, things will be better. It’s really important that workers in this city and city councillors, including the mayor, have good relations. It’s what our residents need ... in order to have quality of life in this city.

“The election is an opportunity for us to have some new people around the table that will make contributions to our community that really are in the best interests of the people.”

Hundreds of union workers from the Amalgamated Transit Union, CUPE, OPSEU and other groups, and their supporters and friends participated in the annual Labour Day March and the picnic that followed at McNabb Park yesterday.

It was a day for workers to come together to celebrate their work over the year.
