Reduced fares for seniors riding OC Transpo will have to wait until council starts wrestling with the city budget.

A motion to immediately reduce the ticket fare for seniors was put off until budget discussions, since such a reduction would create a $1-million shortfall for transit services, said OC Transpo general manager Alain Mercier on Wednesday.

Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Steve Desroches said the item should be discussed in the budget context because it will have an impact on next year’s budget.

“I’m not sure why we’re dealing with this one item outside the budget context,” said Desrochers.

In order to follow the procedure, Bay Ward Coun. Alex Cullen put forward a motion to direct staff to prepare a submission to be considered during the budget.

Mercier said they would prepare a report for the 2011 budget deliberations that include the reductions.
