Prior to their appearance at the 27th Festival Internationale de Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, Que., A R (the R is written backwards, as in the Russian alphabet) Tokyo Taiga will make their North American debut at the National Art Centre’s Fourth Stage on May 18, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the AB Series.

The three members, vocalist Koichi Makigami, percussionist Massa Sato and Russian Altaic throat singer and multi instrumentalist Bolot Bairyshev, will be attending the series after years of effort to get them to Ottawa by Max Middle, the artistic director of the AB Series. “It will be a one-of-kind event for sure,” Middle said. “It will have some pretty wild vocals and Makigami alone is a phenomenal performer. Add the percussion and the throat singing and it will make it even more interesting.”

The “A” in A R Tokyo Taiga refers to the first and last letters of the Russian alphabet, A being the first and the backwards R being the last. Makigami explained that the name of the trio also implies “everything between the two — everything between the beginning and the end”.

Tickets are $30, $25 for seniors and $20 for students.
