Susan Boyle
Album: I Dreamed a Dream
Label: Columbia/Sony
Rating: ***
Just the thought of Susan Boyle covering Wild Horses, the Rolling Stones’ classic country raunch ballad, should be enough to send music fans running for manure shovels. But sometimes it’s best to leave preconceptions at the stable door. Boyle somehow pulls off the impossible. There is a wonderfully unique lilt to her English schoolgirl voice that drags the song’s full five minutes. Ditto with her Streisand-like take on the great American standard, Cry Me a River. Yet, one has to wonder if the world really needs more recorded versions of Amazing Grace, Silent Night, or ... gasp ... The Monkees’ Daydream Believer.
