Timbaland
Album: Shock Value II
Label: Interscope/Universal
Rating: ***
The Timbaland sound has dominated pop music for the past five years. Now, frankly, we’re getting a bit tired of it. Tim sticks to the same formula of synthetic clapbeats backing occasional flights of melody and autotone-tainted vocals from a revolving cast of A-list pop stars. Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado are back, sounding pretty much like all the other Timbaland stuff they’ve done, except without the hit potential. New dalliances with Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus would be forgettable if there was anything worth remembering about them. The interesting tracks here are the ones backed by Timbaland’s little brother, rapper Sebastian, and Canadian singer Esthero. Still, it’s hard to imagine this Timbaland sound continuing into the next decade without radical revision.
