Album: Rat a Tat Tat
Label: Arts & Craft/EMI
Rating: ***
Jason Collett is a curious character. He’s reached a good level of popularity, but his music isn’t nearly as moving as many of Canada’s other guitar-slinging folkies. His records are a mix of catchy rock and acoustic numbers and sleepy, forgettable songs. That said, his music keeps getting better and Rat a Tat Tat is another improvement. It’s not a masterpiece, but songs like the Joel Plaskett-ish Lake Superior and the Dylan-sounding Winnipeg Winds are interesting for the Canadian mythologizing as much as they are for their infectious melodies. Overall, this is a decent record — it may not get regular repeat plays, but it’s still worth checking out.
