Bedford’s Wilton to battle in England for spot in the Olympics

Bedford’s Brendan Wilton will hit the water in England on Friday to begin his quest for a spot at the Summer Olympic Games.

The 23-year-old sailor is competing at the Finn Gold Cup world championship in Falmouth, England, starting Friday.

If he is the top Canadian finisher, he’ll punch his ticket to London.

Wilton is one of five sailors vying for Canada’s Olympic Finn spot. Ontario’s Chris Cook, Greg Douglas and Rob Hemming and Quebec’s Martin Robitaille are the others.

Cook posted the best finish of the five at the Princess Sofia Regatta in Mallorca, Spain, in April, winning bronze. Wilton was the fourth Canadian at 35th behind Cook, Douglas (18th) and Robitaille (33rd).

The weeklong event concludes next Friday.

Wilton, who sails out of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, switched to the Finn class from the Laser class in 2009.
