Ben Smith scores winner as Marlies use big third period to beat Checkers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ben Smith scored the winner in a three-goal third period to lift the Toronto Marlies over the Charlotte Checkers 3-1 on Saturday for their sixth straight win in American Hockey League action.
Jeremy Bracco and Kasperi Kapanen, into an empty net, also chipped in for Toronto (28-11-0), the Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate. Calvin Pickard stopped 27 shots for the win in net.
Andrew Poturalski replied for the Checkers (21-16-1) and Alex Nedeljkovic turned away 18-of-20 shots. It was Charlotte's fourth straight defeat.
The Marlies were scoreless on three power plays and the Checkers failed to convert on six opportunities.
