HALIFAX — Laurentian guard Kadre Gray has been named U Sports men's basketball player of the year.
The six-foot-one guard from Toronto led the Ontario University Athletics conference and was second in U Sports in scoring this season, averaging 24.4 points per game.
Gray, who was U Sports' rookie of the year last season, is the first Voyageur to win the award since Charlie Wise in 1978.
Gray posted three triple-doubles on the season and led U Sports with 141 assists.
"Kadre's work ethic is second to none," said Laurentian head coach Shawn Swords. "This off-season his mindset was to improve in every aspect of the game and encourage the rest of the team to do this as well. The results were amazing to witness. The maturity at which he plays the game is well beyond his years."
University of British Columbia's Conor Morgan, McGill's Dele Ogundokun and University of New Brunswick's Javon Masters were the other nominees.
Other winners were Saint Mary's guard Nikita Kasongo as rookie of the year and Carleton guard Marcus Anderson as defensive player of the year. Dalhousie forward Sven Stammberger picked up the Ken Shields award for student-athlete community service, and Carleton's Dave Smart was named coach of the year for the ninth time.
The U Sports men's basketball championship tournament begins Thursday.
