McGill Martlets advance, looking for second straight national title

REGINA — The No. 4 McGill Martlets have advanced to the next stage in their attempt for back-to-back national championships.

Frederique Potvin led all scorers with 16 points as McGill erased a five-point deficit at halftime to beat the No. 5 McMaster Marauders 55-39 on Thursday in the quarterfinals at the U Sports women's basketball championship.

The Martlets trails 27-22 at the break, but held the Marauders to just 12 second-half points on 4-of-33 shooting en route to the victory.

Potvin nearly matched McMaster's offence all by herself with 10 points in the final two quarters.

Linnaea Harper paced the Mauraders with 10 points.

McGill, which won its first national title in 2017, and the No. 1 Carleton Ravens will meet in Saturday's semifinals.

Nicole Gilmore had 12 points as Carleton beat the No. 8 Calgary Dinos 52-42 in quarterfinal play. Liene Stalidzane had a team-high 10 points for the Dinos as both teams shot below 31 per cent from the field.

Saturday's other semifinal will see No. 2 Regina Cougars against the No. 6 Saskatchewan Huskies.

Carolina Goncalves had a team-high 15 points off the bench as Regina toppled the No. 7 Laval Rouge et Or 76-56 to advance. Jane Gagne dropped 19 points for the Rouge et Or.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan got 25 points from Summer Masikewich in a 72-67 upset win over the No. 3 Acadia Axewomen in the quarterfinals. Acadia's Paloma Anderson, who was named U Sports women's basketball player of the year on Wednesday, scored 25 points for her squad.

The championship game goes Sunday.
