The Toronto Transit Commission, which expects to spend $3.8 million over budget this year to cover employee sick days, is expanding an early intervention program to get workers back on the job sooner.

And in a bid to help make that happen, the TTC is also working on transforming the workplace culture, making it more embracing.

“People who are engaged in the workplace may feel more able to come to work, especially if they’re suffering from something like a cold,” said TTC chair Adam Giambrone.

Sick days have been costing the TTC about $20 million a year — and climbing at the rate of about 1 per cent annually.
