Long lines at fair

  • There was barely any space to move around inside the crowded building and the queue outside grew longer as the day progressed.
  • The JVS fair said it has noticed an increase in the number of returning clients who had found work and then were laid off again.

Nexicore recruiter Dena Marcos sat at an empty desk with only six interviews booked for a handful of specialized high-tech positions.

Across the room, a long line of anxious job hunters snaked away from Joan James’ booth where about 40 jobs were up for grabs.

Those were the extremes of yesterday’s JVS job fair, where more than 600 people came looking for work.

“We do recruiting for a lot of clients,” James said of the dozens of positions she was looking to fill. “They (employers) are looking for people to work in different positions.”

Both recruiters were among the nine employers, including the Toronto Fire Service, that participated in the JVS Toronto Employment and Resource Centre job fair at Victoria Park and Sheppard avenues yesterday. Jo-Anne Cameron, a manager at JVS, said the number of job seekers more than doubled since the last fair in November because of the current hard times. She said JVS had to do a lot of groundwork to convince employers to attend because so few are hiring. But the number of job seekers is surging.
